FAQ:
Myth: "Im not flexible, I can't 'do' yoga"
Truth: Yoga relaxes the mind, which relaxes the body, which then releases tension and allows flexibility to be revealed. Anybody can ‘do’ yoga, it is by practicing that one realises the deeper intention of the practice - to just ‘be’ yourself and enjoy your body as it unfolds each moment.
Do I need my own mat and what should i wear?
Yes, invest in your own mat and invest in a good mat. Its more hygienic and provides inspiration to practice between sessions at home! Wear comfortable clothes you can breath and move in. Ladies, a bra that does not have wire is best. For evening classes, please wear layers and bring your warm socks - in all seasons.
What ‘style’ of yoga does Angela share?
The yoga movement classes that Angela teaches is a form of Hatha Vinyassa Yoga. Vinyassa means to syncronise movement with breath. Angela adjusts the teaching and flow sequence in each session to intuitively suit the needs of those present. She also offers insight through each session into the meridian system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from her Acupuncture practice and gentle movements from Qi Gong.
Her restorative yoga sessions provide the space to completely relax. In restorative sessions, movements are minimal, props are used when available to support the body to relax (in yoga studio, bolsters and in home sessions we make use of furniture and pillows), participants will stay on the ground the whole session - as in no standing. Such is not an exercise session; its a time for the energy systems to relax, let go and from that place, restore.
What has influenced Angela's teaching?
Angela has completed several trainings and workshops with world recongised teachers (Donna Farhi, Mathew Cohen, Max Strom, Judith Lasater). Her Advanced Hatha Yoga teacher training was with Donna Farhi (2006) and it is the intuitive work of this well respected teacher that Angela is most influenced by. Her study time with Donna has totaled over 200 hours and she has also assisted and participated at ongoing workshops with her (2008 in Austin, Texas, 2009 and 2010 in Auckland, NZ, 2013 in Christchurch, NZ).
Angela completed intensive trainings with Max Strom (Laying the Foundation) and Matthew Cohen (Vinyassa Yoga) during the time she was teaching at Yoga Yard in Beijing during the '08 Olympic year. Both these teachers unite Qi Gong with Yoga which has influenced the graceful movement Angela shares in her yoga sessions and has since influenced her own commitment to complete a 2 year diploma in Qi Gong & Tai Chi. These influential teachers, along with her evolving daily practice, time living in Asia and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) studies and Acupuncture practice have inspired her to share with others what she has experienced and practices to maintain well-being and achievable balance in everyday family life.
Angela was initially introduced to the beauty of Yoga through a close friend / Yoga teacher; she then practiced and explored Ashtanga Yoga (a dynamic movement practice), traveling to the home of this tradition in Mysore, India and forms of Japanese Yoga systems while living in Japan - this time also exposed her to various international teachers frequenting Tokyo. Dynamic Yoga movement practices served her in her early 20s but in 2005 she began reading Donna Farhi’s books and deepening her own Yoga practice to serve her in response to daily life. She soon felt drawn to travel and study with Donna in Vancouver. Experiencing the embodied and intelligent teaching of Yoga delivered by Donna Farhi is what really connected and bought yoga to life in her and encouraged an ongoing inquiry adjusting to the needs of the seasons of her life.
Such since has lead her to develop her own intuitive, serving and intent healing practice and combine her Yoga experience with the wisdom of TCM. It is from this embodied space that she is dedicated to share and inspire others to experience what yoga is for them.
